United Arab Emiratesfederation of seven emirates along the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Historically the domain of individual Arab clans and families, the region now comprising the emirates also has been influenced by Persian culture owing to its close proximity to Iran, and its porous maritime borders have for centuries invited migrants and traders from elsewhere.
In the 18th century, Portugal and the Netherlands extended their holdings in the region but retreated with the growth of British naval power there; following a series of truces with Britain in the 19th century, the emirates united to form the Trucial States also called Trucial Oman or the Trucial Sheikhdoms. The states gained autonomy following World War II —45when the trucial states of Bahrain and Qatar declared independent statehood.
The rest were formally united inwith the city of Abu Dhabi serving as the capital. The emirates comprise a mixed environment of rocky desert, coastal plains and wetlands, and waterless mountains. Standing at a historic and geographic crossroads and made up of diverse nationalities and ethnic groups, the United Arab Emirates present a striking blend of ancient customs and modern technology, of cosmopolitanism and insularity, and of wealth and want. It has coastlines on the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, with Saudi Arabia to the west and southwest, and Oman to the southeast and also on the eastern tip of the Musandam Peninsula as well as an Omani enclave within its borders.
It is a country rich in history and culture and an easy starting point for travels in the Middle East. For most Western tourists, the U. The malls are extraordinarily modern, filled with virtually any product available in the West save sexually explicit material; movies are censored, as are, to some extent, magazines.
The less well known side of the U. Alcohol is widely available at many restaurants and bars in Dubai and in the tourist hotels of every other emirate save Sharjah. There is a legal but roundly overlooked requirement to have a license to buy alcohol.
The alcohol license is proof that the bearer is a non-Muslim. A passport will not suffice. However, you can purchase alcohol duty-free at the airport to bring into the U.
Sharjah emirate is completely dry. The requirements to get alcohol license Dubai are only if you are resident or owned the 2 years visa not the tourist or visit visa. The roads and other public facilities are modern if, at times, extremely crowded. Supermarkets offer a vast assortment of products from Europe and the U. Major international chains such as Ikea and Carrefour have a presence and fast-food chains nearly all from the U.
On the other hand, there are still a few crowded traditional souks filled with products from around the world, rug stores. These can be hard to find for the average traveler, as the malls tend to gain an overwhelming amount of attention.
Please note that contrary to what is printed in guidebooks, the souks in Abu Dhabi were torn down in and no longer exist. The souks in Dubai are still wonderful to explore, though. The combination of Emirati Arab culture mixed with Southeast and South Asian as well as African and other immigrants who live here adds to an already vast and vibrant melting pot of cultures. The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven different emirates, each with its own king or Sheikh.
Each emirate retains considerable autonomy, most notably over oil revenues. In theory, the President and Prime Minister are elected by the Supreme Council, which is composed of the kings of each of the seven emirates.
However, in practice, the king of Abu Dhabi is always elected President while the king of Dubai is always elected Prime Minister, making the posts de facto hereditary.
As a result the rulers--or Sheikhs--of each emirate are revered and can radically affect the way of life in his respective Emirate. Each Emmirate serves almost like a city-state, like a collection of seven Singapores. For example, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum of Dubai is very modern, so Dubai is very forward-thinking and cosmopolitan. The ruling sheikhs of Ajman and Sharjah are more conservative, thus the rules there are stricter concerning religion, alcohol, and general living conditions.
The country is extraordinarily dry, getting only a few days of rain a year. Despite that, Emiratis use water at an alarming rate: there are broad swaths of grass in the major public parks, for example, and landscaping can be extensive in the resorts or other public places. The majority of this water comes from desalinization. Visitors do not pay for their water use. It is almost always sunny. Rain can happen between November and February, and can cause road hazards when it does.
The population is incredibly diverse.Their boundaries are complex, with numerous enclaves within the various emirates. One of the rulers serves as the President of the United Arab Emirates. Human occupation of the present UAE has been traced back to the emergence of anatomically modern humans from Africa someBCE through finds at the Faya-1 site in MleihaSharjah.
Burial sites dating back to the Neolithic Age and the Bronze Age include the oldest known such inland site at Jebel Buhais. The ensuing Wadi Suq period and three Iron Ages saw the emergence of nomadism as well as the development of water management and irrigation systems supporting human settlement in both the coast and interior.
The UAE's long history of trade led to the emergence of Julfarin the present-day emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, as a major regional trading and maritime hub in the area.
The maritime dominance of the Persian Gulf by Emirati traders led to conflicts with European powers, including the Portuguese Empire and the British Empire. Following decades of maritime conflict, the coastal emirates became known as the Trucial States with the signing of a Perpetual Treaty of Maritime Peace with the British in ratified in and again inwhich established the Trucial States as a British Protectorate.
This arrangement ended with independence and the establishment of the United Arab Emirates on 2 Decemberimmediately following the British withdrawal from its treaty obligations.
Islam is the official religion and Arabic is the official language of the UAE. The UAE's oil reserves are the sixth-largest in the world while its natural gas reserves are the world's seventh-largest. The UAE's rising international profile has led to it being recognised as a regional and a middle power. The land of the Emirates has been occupied for thousands of years.
Stone tools recovered from Jebel Faya in the emirate of Sharjah reveal a settlement of people from Africa someyears ago and a stone tool used for butchering animals discovered at Jebel Barakah on the Arabian coast suggests an even older habitation fromyears ago.
This contact persisted and became wide-ranging, probably motivated by the trade in copper from the Hajar Mountainswhich commenced around 3, BCE. From 1, BC to the advent of Islam in Eastern Arabia, through three distinctive Iron Ages Iron Age 1, 1,—1, BC; Iron Age 2, 1,— BC and Iron Age 3 — BC and the Mleiha period BC onwardthe area was variously occupied by Achaemenid and other forces and saw the construction of fortified settlements and extensive husbandry thanks to the development of the falaj irrigation system.
From the second century AD, there was a movement of tribes from Al Bahreyn towards the lower Gulf, together with a migration among the Azdite Qahtani or Yamani and Quda'ah tribal groups from south-west Arabia towards central Oman. The spread of Islam to the North Eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula is thought to have followed directly from a letter sent by the Islamic Prophet, Muhammadto the rulers of Oman in AD, nine years after the hijrah. This led to a group of rulers travelling to Medinaconverting to Islam and subsequently driving a successful uprising against the unpopular Sasanids, who dominated the Northern coasts at the time.
The Caliph Abu Bakr sent an army from the capital Medina which completed its reconquest of the territory the Ridda Wars with the Battle of Dibba in which 10, lives are thought to have been lost.
InJulfar in the area of today's Ras Al Khaimah was an important port that was used as a staging post for the Islamic invasion of the Sasanian Empire. The earliest Christian site in the UAE was first discovered in the s, an extensive monastic complex on what is now known as Sir Bani Yas Island and which dates back to the 7th century.
Thought to be Nestorian and built in AD, the church appears to have been abandoned peacefully in AD. The harsh desert environment led to the emergence of the "versatile tribesman", nomadic groups who subsisted due to a variety of economic activities, including animal husbandry, agriculture and hunting. The seasonal movements of these groups led to not only frequent clashes between groups but also the establishment of seasonal and semi-seasonal settlements and centres.
By the 18th century, the Bani Yas confederation was the dominant force in most of the area now known as Abu Dhabi, while the Northern Al Qawasim Al Qasimi dominated maritime commerce. The Portuguese maintained an influence over the coastal settlements, building forts in the wake of the bloody 16th-century conquests of coastal communities by Albuquerque and the Portuguese commanders who followed him — particularly on the east coast at MuscatSohar and Khor Fakkan.
The southern coast of the Persian Gulf was known to the British as the " Pirate Coast ", as boats of the Al Qawasim federation harassed British-flagged shipping from the 17th century into the 19th. British bloody expeditions to protect the Indian trade led to campaigns against Ras Al Khaimah and other harbours along the coast, including the Persian Gulf Campaign of and the more successful campaign of The following year, Britain and a number of local rulers signed a maritime trucegiving rise to the term Trucial Stateswhich came to define the status of the coastal emirates.
A further treaty was signed in and, in the Perpetual Treaty of Maritime Truce was agreed. To this was added the 'Exclusive Agreements', signed inwhich made the Trucial States a British protectorate. Under the treaty, the trucial sheikhs agreed not to dispose of any territory except to the British and not to enter into relationships with any foreign government other than the British without their consent.
In return, the British promised to protect the Trucial Coast from all aggression by sea and to help in case of land attack. However, the British prohibition of the slave trade meant an important source of income was lost to some sheikhs and merchants.Bbc iplayer radio 3 words and music
Inthe Qubaisat tribe settled at Khawr al Udayd and tried to enlist the support of the Ottomans, whose flag was occasionally seen flying there. Khawr al Udayd was claimed by Abu Dhabi at that time, a claim supported by the British.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the pearling industry thrived, providing both income and employment to the people of the Persian Gulf.
The First World War had a severe impact on the industry, but it was the economic depression of the late s and early s, coupled with the invention of the cultured pearlthat wiped out the trade. The remnants of the trade eventually faded away shortly after the Second World Warwhen the newly-independent Government of India imposed heavy taxation on pearls imported from the Arab states of the Persian Gulf.
